Join us for an enlightening online event hosted by SoTo, featuring Marcelo, a distinguished Lecturer in Education at the University of Sussex. Marcelo co-leads the BA in Primary and Early Years Education with QTS Course and is the creator and author of The Joy of Not Knowing, published by Routledge in 2021. With a rich background as a former scientist and primary school headteacher, Marcelo brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the field of education. In this session, Marcelo will explore his innovative approach to education and leadership, underpinned by the principles of The Joy of Not Knowing. His key ideas focus on constructing classrooms as democratic communities of enquiry, where thriving as a lifelong learner and global citizen is nurtured. Marcelo emphasises the importance of embracing discomfort and uncertainty in learning, fostering intrinsic motivation to explore new concepts. Marcelo advocates for a transformative shift from a prescriptive curriculum to one that emphasises how we teach, including the critical component of learning to learn. He believes in dedicating a week to "learning to learn," creating conditions that enable children to feel confident and successful. His methods reject ability grouping, promoting classroom setups where everyone is equal, and every child is recognised as an expert in their own learning journey. Central to Marcelo's philosophy is the importance of culture, values, and models of learning. He highlights the necessity of environments where children are valued for who they are and can develop a love of learning by becoming comfortable with uncertainty from a young age. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Marcelo share his insights and strategies for creating vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic learning environments, and discover how to cultivate a lifelong love of learning in every child.
