Date 28 Nov - 8:15 am

Educators from across the country gathered at the University of Suffolk on the evening of November 20 to attend the memorial lecture.

Dr Malcolm Groves delivered the lecture titled “From the Inside Out, Leading Schools to Build a Society that Cares,” focusing on fostering community values within schools.

Professor West-Burnham, who passed away in December 2022, was known for his thought-provoking work on leadership and community.

The lecture was a collaborative effort between the University of Suffolk, Schools of Tomorrow, and ASSET Education, all of which are part of the Legacy Group, supported by the professor’s family.

Dr Groves urged educators to look beyond traditional metrics to nurture values and practices vital for a future-facing community, emphasising the importance of trust, curiosity, and hope.

Two young individuals, Eva and Esme, also contributed to the lecture, discussing the three Rs of role, responsibility, and risk, and how they developed resilience and confidence.

Fringe events complemented the lecture, where children from St Helen’s Primary delivered speeches titled “Sixty Seconds to Change the World.”

The primary school’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion group, comprising nearly 30 children, shared their initiatives aimed at raising awareness and making a difference.

The Oaks Primary also opened its doors to visitors on Friday morning, showcasing their outstanding work in oracy.

Dr Kelly-Marie Taylor, senior lecturer in childhood and education at the University of Suffolk, expressed the institution’s delight in hosting Dr Groves.

She noted the transformative discussions held during the event, which honoured and celebrated the legacy of Professor West-Burnham.

She also praised the involvement of children and young people, considering their perspectives integral to the event.
